Alright, it's FINALLY time for the fourth (and final) character designer interview from the Tales of Berseria Illustrations book. This time it's Minoru Iwamoto, who designed Eizen (hot, we stan) and Laphicet (cute, we stan). He was also the art director of the game itself, so he was very important to how Berseria's art turned out generally. He's the one who insisted to Inomata that it was fine for Velvet to have underboob. Maybe she would have gotten scared and not done it if it weren't for him, just kidding knowing her she'd probably have tried it anyway.

Also this is certainly not the last thing I'll be translating from this book, it's just the last of the interviews. There's still one last section that actually is pretty long that goes more in-depth into the details of each character's design, so that'll be fun whenever I get to it. I'll have to apologize so profusely for my likely-incorrect terminology because I never actually played Berseria or Zestiria in English. Anyway, back to Iwamoto. This guy talks about character design a lot in terms of childbirth so forgive me for any phrasing that seems odd in that respect. As far as I'm concerned it was a little odd in Japanese (though I get the logic of using those words) so it should be a little odd in English. Anyway LET'S GOOOO. ( Read more... )

comments

Last update: 3/30/2026 (Added the next little phrase, "do it today, right now!")

Nobody will care about this but whatever, it's getting posted. I believe I specifically ordered this book instead of stumbling on it, unlike the other Japanese books nobody cares about. Someone who'd lived in Japan recommended it to me because I'm a depressed/anxious type of person with a whole lot of issues and so were they, and they thought it was helpful. But I really wasn't close with the three people I knew who'd been to Japan in college, but I also definitely bought it during my college years, so I don't remember who recommended it to me at all. Oh well. It's a book I have that has a pretty low reading level, so Imma read it and post it. It's basically a bunch of affirmations, cognitive behavioral therapy style. You're missing a lot without the cute illustrations though, seriously.

The book is technically three parts. The brief introduction, and then two sections of different sorts of affirming phrases. So I'm just gonna have three cuts here (well, two, until I get to the second part). It'll be weird that the introduction is all alone like that but whatever. Each phrase is also short so this should feed my desire for feelings of accomplishment pretty well. Let's goo!

Introduction( Read more... )

Magical Catchphrases That Inspire( Read more... )

comments

Last Update: 4/10/2026 (Added Chapter 15. DAD KNOWS, GUYS. HE KNOWS.)

Chapter 12 and on of the Concrete Revolutio novel. The first 11 chapters can be found here.

I decided to split my translation of the novel here, not because I was running into any character limits, but because it was getting seriously annoying to navigate it unless you were viewing it on the journal itself with all cuts intact, rather than the actual post that people can link to where all the cuts are automatically expanded. If you don't know what I'm talking about, don't worry about it. And as for the usual disclaimers I mentioned in the previous post, that had the first 11 chapters of the novel, there's no way there aren't mistakes in my translation. Hopefully any errors that are actually important will become clear to me before I'm done, but hoping for a thing doesn't magically make it reality. I'm just doing my best in the moment while still ultimately focusing on getting it out there. I can and will edit it later anyway. Anyway, time for the second third of Superhuman Phantasmagoria: Shinka 36!

Chapter 12( Read more... )

Chapter 13( Read more... )

Chapter 14( Read more... )

Chapter 15( Read more... )

comments

For whatever reason, Takano was posted last on the site (not even the same day as Aikawa) despite his song being played in episode 23 and hers being from the final episode. Maybe they liked his comments more. I sure do because what the fuck was this world's 2016 and where the fuck did we go ten years after? WHAT IS THIS DIMENSION'S 2026 WTF. Anyway take care of yourselves, because we're not in ConRevo's 2026, unfortunately.)

Time for the second set of the guest music artist comments. There are less of these ones compared to season 1, namely because The Last Song is itself shorter than season 1. If you meant to read the guest musicians' comments from the first season (and notably, performers like ZAQ and Yohske Yamamoto who continued to be involved in the second season) you can read those here.

But anyway.
Just the third of the four interviews with Berseria's main character designers here. Nothing to see. Except wait, this guy's been working on Tales games for... way longer than I expected, actually. Him describing the type of work he did gives a bit of a better idea of the inner workings of what goes into final character designs other than the overly-simplified idea of like, "we hire inomata and she make a pwetty thing :)" He's also someone who had to guts to criticize the series and insist in an interview that the Tales series needs to step out of its comfort zone a little and try to do more different things. And I mean, he really DID insist even after the interviewer was like "yeah but the fans want the comfy usual Tales experience." I love and fully agree with his reasoning, too. It's been a long time since I've felt what he's talking about feeling with being super excited at some awesome surprise a game had to offer, but I still have unforgettable memories of times when games have made me feel that way. It's an unexpected interview and I'm more interested in what he has to say about other things after translating it. Enjoy!

comments

This post only covers the musical artist comments from the first 13 episodes. For everything from The Last Song, that will go here.

Last Update: 2/20/2026. (Added the last two comment sections for the first cours. The Last Song stuff will be in a separate post, when I feel like going back it. And when I feel not sick, why can't the middle schoolers go easy on me with their constant contagions.)

Had to get to these eventually too. These are the last things on the official site's Special section left for me to translate (other than the event reviews, but those don't seem to have anything of any interest since they're basically just descriptions of what happened at the event in question). So here we are, a few words from the various music artists who were involved in the vocal songs used in the show, including the OP/ED theme creators as well as the guest artists who provided insert songs. I'll be splitting the post between the first cours of the show and The Lost Song, since there's, um, actually quite a lot of insert song artists who have comments, and I don't want any of my posts to be outrageously long! I'm adding a note in parentheses to each of these titles too, that says what the artist's song is for, since it's not necessarily clear from their comments where their song was used either.

Comments from ZAQ (creator of the opening theme) have arrived!!
I know, I know, this isn't ConRevo OR Inomata. But alas, it must be done, because I see no reason why everything in this book shouldn't be translated. By me, since I really have no clue whether anyone else has translated any particular thing from the Tales franchise at this point. Boy was everything so much easier to find in the internet of forums and fansites compared to the internet of Reddits and Discords.

comments

Gotta take a break to get back to my original genre of Inomata. Since the world has taken her from us, though, there is only so much of her left in the world beyond our memories. Makes me a little sad, since I was always inspired by her art and designs. Oh well, this one is from the Tales of Berseria Illustrations Book, and interview in question took place on August 26, 2016. There are more interviews in this book than just Mutsumi Inomata's, but I'll get to them later, let's stick with our first love, shall we?

comments

Last update: 3/29/2026. (Added the sixth story, If Winter Comes. I actually liked this one a lot and it didn't make me uncomfortable like Oysters did. It's a nice little goofy sci-fi story.)

Another collection of stories I got from, if I remember correctly, Midway Bookstore. It has a Kinokuniya sticker on it though so I'm just going to keep being jealous that I've been to Seattle's Kinokuniya once and Chicago's Kinokuniya once. And don't live in a city that has a Kinokuniya. Ugh. Then again, I spend my entire paycheck from working at Daiso AT Daiso, so maybe it's for the best that Kinokuniya does not exist in my state.

Also, the first story absolutely did not take me just 10 minutes to read. Actually it took me way more than that. Darn! I can't imagine the others are going to either. What a sad life. Also, I'm not going to say who did the illustrations anymore, from here on out. There's just no point. It has nothing to do with what I'm doing, which is translating the written word as best as I can.

A Single Bunch of Grapes (by Takeo Arishima)( Read more... )

Rail Cart (by Ryuunosuke Akutagawa)( Read more... )

Mother's Garden (by Noriko Takazaki)( Read more... )

Oysters (by Anton Chekhov)( Read more... )

If Winter Comes (by Shinichi Hoshi)( Read more... )

comments

Last Update: March 5, 2026. (Feb 1st was when I added Chapter 11 here, but today I changed a single line in Chapter 2 because I finally realized what Kisara was actually supposed to be mumbling, something I read reminded me that I'd translated "sensei" as if Kisara were a teacher because I didn't know crap about him (shoulda guessed they meant it in more of a "this is a master at an art" kinda way from the setting of a publishing house New Years party though) and also as of today I'm finally splitting the novel translation off into a second post that's got two chapters ready for you. You can read more starting with Chapter 12 here.)

It's time! October 4th (which is already now in Japan) is the tenth anniversary of Concrete Revolutio's first episode premiere. Now it's not just old in spirit, it is old in existence itself! There's a prequel novel called Superhuman Phantasmagoria Shinka 36, written by Sho Aikawa (who wrote the anime's story in the first place). I've had it for a bit. I was hoping to get more translated before posting anything, but when I realized the tenth anniversary was coming up, I figured I'd better just get as far as I can and post what's ready and leave it at that. You shouldn't expect updates to come fast, since this is certainly above my reading level and longer than anything else I've done.

<br
Last update 10/2/2025 (Added Aki Toyosaki's comments. And would you look at that, there were only those six anyway, so this is done now unless I come back to edit it.)

I was always planning to do this anyway, but I thought since it would be less insightful on the creation and inspiration of the story, I'd do it a billion years later and focus on Aikawa's prequel novel instead. But the prequel novel is hard for my unfluent eyes! I don't know these kanji! I am unimpressed with the speed of my progress trying to read it but don't want to become discouraged, so for now I'll just do that tiny bit by tiny bit on my days off from work and do stuff like this and other easier things alongside it and on work days. I like to feel like I'm accomplishing things. I need that dopamine. I'm a druggie, gimme my instant gratification and I'll eventually learn enough kanji and git gud at grammar so the novel will become instant gratification in its own right.

... Anyway. Today is Cast Comments Day. I added the parenthetical "voice of whoever" to the titles for your convenience.
In this other Tales of Graces book I have, there's these nice character profiles, and all of the playable characters as well as a handful of other major characters have comments from creators there. Those creators are Mutsumi Inomata (the character designer), Go Tanaka (the main scenario writer of Graces), and Hideo Baba (the producer of Graces). Since the book was published for Tales of Graces f, rather than the original Wii release, there's discussion of the future arc and commentary on characters from it, too, in case you haven't played that part yet, I guess.

I don't know why I wasn't posting these as I translated them, but I only just thought about how that's unusual for me with multi-sectioned things like this, like, yesterday. So here's all of those comments, all at once.

comments

This is... basically an Inomata interview! It's our genre, guys! This particular one is from the Tales of Graces Official Complete Guide (not the Graces f guide, though I'm sure such a thing exists, I do not possess it right now). It includes the story of her meeting Michael Jackson too, which I'm sure even people who didn't know that was a thing have been curious about. That's how time works, right? I'm sure it is.

And I guess this isn't technically an interview, but it might as well be one. Players submitted questions and some were selected to ask her. That's basically it.

comments

I hate atmosphere science, it's so boring. But electricity and how one man ruined the entire world with a single invention? I'll take it! Plus it's the last story in the entire book heck yeah I did it guys!)

Here's the last section of this book before my normie schoolchild book practice moves on to something that's a little harder and hopefully more interesting too. Like, I might have mostly fiction after I finish this up, so that'll be nice.

Until otherwise mentioned (AKA until the final storie) the author of this section is Harumi Uenami and the artist (that you cannot enjoy without buying the book sry) is Naoki Nishiyama.

Anyway, on with the blurbs. I hated the first one with all my heart because it was unbelievably boring even though I actually found most of the previous ones mildly interesting when they didn't just reinforce things I already knew. Warmth of air, ugh. Ugh ugh ugh. I want to die. Don't tell me how thunderstorms work if it's going to be this boring OH WAIT IT'S NOT EVEN ABOUT THUNDERSTORMS IT'S LITERALLY JUST WY DUZ WIND BLOW WHO CARES here you go ( Read more... )

comments

Last year today, Mutsumi Inomata passed away at 63. I wished she could have stayed longer. I love her character designs, as a loser who got extremely extremely into Tales games (particularly Destiny remake, Rebirth, Graces, Berseria, and I'll throw Zesty in too for good measure). I was such a fan of her character designs and her watercolor art I watched all kinds of random things like Acrobunch and I even went through the pain of watching Brain Powerd. Truly. I saw that before I got into Gundam, so Toshiyuki Tomino meant little to me. All I cared about was Yoko Kanno and the person I want to celebrate today with this translation: Mutsumi Inomata.

This interview is centered on Genmu Senki Leda, a nice, contained, memorable movie/OVA that she served as animation director and character designer for. It was 10 pages long in the book (though there were also a lot of her sketches of Leda characters on the pages), and took me some time to translate. I also transcribe books by typing everything up first and search for unknown kanji by radical instead of using automated tools so screw you it took a long time to do all the things. The interview is not ultra in-depth about process type things, but Inomata's personality shows through really clearly in it, and it's actually really entertaining because of that. I also just am so happy to hear about some of her tastes. Like, she watched Gamba no Bouken and she likes hardboiled noir type stories. Anyway, I'm rambling now. Let's do this. Bold is interviewer, the rest is Inomata.

comments

Last Update: 5/10/2025 (OH MY GOSH AM I DONE AGAIN?)

On the official site for, YOU GUESSED IT, CONREVO NEVER ENDS IN MY BRAIN, there's a section where they put a bunch of staff comments and mini interviews as promo mats (oh my god, I love promo mats so much but nobody else ever cares). I bet they're interesting. In fact, the very first one already was, although part of me is shocked that "Wild Cards" was actually what I thought it was when I first read the title, before I'd read anything that was actually said about it. Bet you didn't expect that to be one of Concrete Revolutio's inspirations. I sure didn't, though I understand how. The huge difference between how the director and the writer write is also very funny to me. Director: "So. This thing happened once. And I thought it was interesting. So we made the thing." Writer: "REAL PARAGRAPHS AND MORE PARAGRAPHS AND LIFE STORY AND INTERESTING DEETS"

It will be interesting to see what else the staff members say. Might take me some time to get to more since I'm working on a bigger project too that I've actually given myself a deadline for, but we'll get there.

Comments From Sho Aikawa (scriptwriter) and director Seiji Mizushima
Sanctuary was an artbook put together to commemorate Mutsumi Inomata's 40th anniversary in the world of illustration. This is a little hand-written blub she wrote in it (and I am posting it on both my grandpa's birthday and also hers. Odd how that works. Weirder still they died last year in in the same month, only ten days apart, and I'm actually really sad about that tbfh). It's short but sweet. Here's what she said in that hand-written blurb (hand-writing is tough to read and the fact of it being handwriting is the only reason I bothered since I thought it would be good practice):

I was simply drawing pictures, and then 40 years had passed by. It surprised even me.
To commemorate my 40th anniversary, we've created this wonderful artbook!

Out of the many artworks, some were chosen that are familiar to you, and some where chosen that haven't been seen that much... Regardless, the selection was mostly centered on my hand-painted works.

Seeing some of this art for the first time in a while brings back nostalgic memories for me. I will be so happy if you all enjoy it.

comments

Next section is Food and Everyday Objects.

Yay, time for part two. At this point I'm starting to wonder if for the future, I should just put these short, large-print books for kids as one post each even when there really are a lot of pages just full of the text. At least for now, though, I'm going to keep this one going this way.

I don't remember what section is going to come after this one, but I'm positive there wasn't a part 3 for living beings. So here's your finale of aminals and fwowers.

Unless otherwise noted, these were written by Yu Ozaki (for plants), or Nobuyuki Irisawa (for bugs), and illustrated by Nobuyuki Irisawa. Not that I'm posting the illustrations, but I can pretend I was able to read that name. I can pretend it's really Irisawa, a name I've never seen before and which feels unusual.

comments

I'm tired of being sick. Here's where I'll be posting the next section's blurbs (why are you reading any of this, what is wrong with you).

Since I said I was going to split up this childrens' book translation by section, here's the second section of the goofy thing. This time it's about living things. It also actually has two sections about living creatures, hence the 1. There will one day be a 2 and it's not entirely my fault. Anyway, nobody cares about this so here we go. These ones were, unless I say otherwise, written by Yu Ozaki and illustrated by Youko Oishi.

comments

For Episode 1-13 column translations, go here instead.

Last Update: November 14, 2024 (I DUNNO I MADE SOME LIGHT EDITS SO I GUESS IT'S DONE?)

It is time! I've started rewatching The Last Song, so I'm gonna translate the last batch of columns from Concrete Revolutio's official site, which were never translated into English. They were written by Ryuusuke Hikawa, who seems to be an anime and tokusatsu historian of sorts. They're very interesting columns that give you a lot of context for ConRevo's inspirations, both fictional, and real-world. Because boy, you might think it's just gonna be "wow ultraman inspired this thing and cyborg 009 inspired that one" but it's actually also "this thing happened in japanese history and boy was it a whole thing that affected entire generations and consequently all media directed at the generation." So I'm telling you. These are interesting. You are missing out. Don't worry though because I'm fixing it.

Superhuman Investigation Column #14: The World Takes a Turn For the Worse and Tokusatsu Makes a Comeback( Read more... )

Superhuman Investigation Column #15: The Focal Point of Superhuman Media in the Late Autumn of 1971( Read more... )

Superhuman Investigation Column #16: Gag Anime as a Supernatural Existence( Read more... )

Superhuman Investigation Column #17: Depths of the Earth, Bottom of the Sea, Unexplored Lands, Space( Read more... )

Superhuman Investigation Column #18: Mass Production of Human-sized Superhumans( Read more... )

These were never officially translated into English, as far as I know, and as far as I know, only one or two were ever translated by fans. I've always been personally fascinated by ConRevo in a way that's difficult for me to explain, but I know the extreme level of references due to its broad inspirations is one of the things that gets me stuck on it. So here I am, finally translating these darned columns for real.

The first one is not SUPER interesting, but I promise it does get more involved after that first, introductory column. Also I've noticed I'm getting less stuck in the original grammar and sentence-belonging as I go, thank god. Unfortunately that means the earlier translations are stiffer and awkwarder. Oh well.
I'm sure you all finally know that Hear the Universe is the best Walküre song. But did you know that Change!!!!! is the second best? It's true. So I did the usual color-coding so you can tell who's who in case you're somehow confused AND care at the same time. But wait, there's more! It didn't seem like there were any English translations on the internet from a lazy google search, so I decided to go ahead and translate it. But it's not an easy song to translate. The lyrics are amazingly fun in ways that can't be translated to English because we simply have different words. It's also just hard in the normal ways. (ps Uluru is also known as Ayers Rock which you may be more familiar with and I have no idea what else that line could be so I guess it's gonna be that, which is actually kind of disturbing)

comments

Here, have some lyrics to a seemingly-untranslated-into-English song I translated in a few minutes while listening to how we're actually already beyond the point of no return as far as climate change goes. This song was used as an insert song in two (maybe three?) episodes of Juushinki Pandora/Last Hope and it's bitchin'. It helps that I already liked Megumi Nakajima a lot, but here's an awesome song in a style she hasn't exactly toyed with before... a style of song I happen to love. It's jazzy.( Read more... )

comments

That moment when you're flipping through your book that already alarmed you with its nudity all over its cover and realize that the reason the OP of this anime is full of naked anorexic women is because Inomata painted the main character nude like fifty times.

I started translating the interview contained in this Spiral nudity Book of this horrible anime that I have an odd attachment to (screw you, Inomata and Yoko Kanno) with Mutsumi Inomata, the character designer. I didn't finish it because I don't finish anything and I was offended that Tomino doesn't like Inomata's art. Goodbye.

EDIT: just kidding I finished it a year later have fun

comments
